Discopolis [Interview]

by: Andrew

Third and final part of the monthly interviews. Discopolis are next up in the email hot seat. Check out what gets these young Scots raring to go!

What are the Top 5 tracks you have on repeat right now?

YouandEwan -1988
Radio Dept.- Heavens on Fire
Sbtrkt – Trials of the Past
Deadmau5 – Brazil
We Were Promised Jetpacks – Human Error

If you could have a day in the studio with any musician past or present who would it be?

Laurie: I know Dave would probably love to go into the studio with Deadmau5 and see how he makes his kickdrums sound so heavy and suchlike. Me and Fergus would probably go in with Bloc Party and try and join in on their jams but end up just watching them. In terms of new bands, we would love to work with Dems.

What was the last album you were all really blown away by?

Laurie: The last album that I loved was ‘Total Life Forever’ by Foals which came out in May 2010 and is still on constant repeat on my Ipod.

How is the writing process for your productions? Do you all get together and start throwing ideas about or will one person lead proceedings?

We tend to go off an idea that one of us has and then build on it or just sit around playing together for ages until something good comes out. We don’t really have a specific formula.

When you’re not on stage / rehearsing / writing – where will we find you?

Probably on Dave’s computer mastering one of our tracks. We really don’t do much other than write music, we are quite boring.

Ambitions – Where would you like to be in ten years?

Hopefully sitting back in a mansion with lots of money… Or sitting back with a selection of material that we are very proud of.

Well that’s it! Three interviews down. Don’t miss seeing Discopolis, Peace and Regal Safari doing their thing TONIGHT at The Old Blue Last. Doors 8.30PM – Free Entry.

Regal Safari [Interview]

by: Andrew

Part two of the monthly Interviews. Regal Safari follow from Peace and talk Michael Rother, Walls and their coffee drinking ritual.

What are the Top 5 tracks you have on repeat right now?

Gold Zebra – Love, French, Better
Walls – Heat Haze
Patten – Fire Dream
Robert Schroeder – Utopia
Martial Canterel – Don’t Let Me Go

If you could have a day in the studio with any musician past or present who would it be?

Michael Rother. The fluidity of his work is unequaled.

What was the last album you were all really blown away by?

Coracle by Walls is the most beautiful album we’ve heard in a while. Their production is really enjoyable too.

How is the writing process for your productions? Do you all get together and start throwing ideas about or will one person lead proceedings?

You can’t take creativity for granted so there’s no orthodox method for us for writing. Many times we’ll record one of us playing on a synthesizer for half an hour whilst the other produces the parts that they like and quite quickly we have a huge amount of material for a song. Sometimes one person will make something preliminary alone that will push us towards finishing a song; we always, however, write and produce our songs together – our sound is constantly being influenced by each other’s ideas. We also produce alone just for self-enjoyment so naturally material can originate from that.

When you’re not on stage / rehearsing / writing – where will we find you?

As a ritual, drinking coffee.

Ambitions – Where would you like to be in ten years?

Writing a concept album for the debut release of our band that we’ll have just started by then called Illegal Calamari.

Regal Safari play alongside Peace and Discopolis this Thursday at The Old Blue Last. Free Entry.

Led Zeppelin – Stairway to heaven

If you could have a day in the studio with any musician past or present who would it be?

Gary Barlow

What was the last album you were all really blown away by?

Last album was Father son holy ghost by Girls

How is the writing process for your productions? Do you all get together and start throwing ideas about or will one person lead proceedings?

We have no memory of writing any of our songs ever

When you’re not on stage / rehearsing / writing – where will we find you?

When we’re not doing band stuff we just hang around on beaches and stuff with loads of girls or ice skating

Ambitions – Where would you like to be in ten years?

In ten years i want property.

So that’s that. Peace play alongside Regal Safari and Discopolis this Thursday at The Old Blue Last. Free Entry.

Deadly Presents: The Compilation

by: Andrew

We’re constantly listening to new music in the office and when we were given the opportunity to put together a compilation of the songs we love we jumped at it.

Well, kind of. We were first asked about 18 months ago and we just kept working and working at it. Adding and deleting songs amidst a lot banter and drunken chats.

Finally, it’s done. We asked our favourite designer, Sam Coldy, to create a cover that probably makes no sense but looks magic. All of the amazing artists on board got involved and we love the result.

The compilation is over 2 CDs (with select songs on one heavyweight, deluxe RED vinyl) and something that we hope stands the test of time as great songs.

Visions Of Trees – Sirens [Video]

by: Andrew

London duo Visions Of Trees release their new single ‘Sirens’ via Deadly Recordings. Buy now from iTunes.

We’re delighted to be releasing the next single for East London male-female duo Visions of Trees, aka Sara Atalar and Joni Juden. They’ve been on the Deadly radar for a while and after hearing Sirens we didn’t think twice about putting it out. It’s a great way to introduce the band to their quickly growing fan base.

Check out the video above, it serves a great purpose in intensifying the experience and compliments the tracks sound perfectly. We caught up with long time Deadly collaborator and Director Jake Harmer to talk through the ideas behind the video..

Visually and aesthetically – another amazing video. Can you tell us a little about your influences on this video?
Yo!

The concept was to homage the lo-fi science fiction movies of the early 70s. The abstract narrative is purposefully left open and focus was more driven to create a series of iconic portraits of our duo. Common traits of the era including kitsch ‘in camera effects’ and vibrant colour were key, though my aim was to direct a darker, more stylish, modern reinterpretation.

What do you look for in a song when drawing up the ideas for the video? Is it lyrics? Does a genre of music – automatically point you in a certain direction?

The lyrics play their part, though I’m inspired more by the ambience of the composition.
Sometimes I’ve had an idea brewing in the back of my mind for years and am just looking for the opportunity to bring that idea to fruition.

Genre to me doesn’t play a part in defining a film’s aesthetic, though when working within ‘pop’ you are definitely restricted in how far you can push the boundaries. Not taking risks and alienating an existing fan base is often the underlying message from commissioners, that’s why I loved working with Deadly and V.O.T as they certainly never shy away from notoriety!

What’s next for you?
!Huge hyper fashion film! The successor to 2010’s, L’Hotel Dystopie. All a bit hush hush at the moment though watch this space…

Sirens is out now on deadly recordings.

Deadly Monthly: Peace (Live) + Discopolis (Live) – Thursday November 3rd

by: Andrew

In its early workings, the Deadly monthly has already showcased a hat full of emerging talent with the likes of New Look, Visions of Trees, Toy, Tom The Lion and The History Of Apple Pie, making the party a great success so far.

This month is set to be no different as we welcome two of our favorite new bands. After a tip off up north, we caught wind of Discopolis, an electronic 3 piece from Edinburgh who blew us away with their first tracks as a band (listen to the epic Zenithobia below) and we knew we had to get them involved.

Joining them will be Peace. They’ve been on the Deadly radar for a while and ever since they posted the demo of BBLOOD (below) we’ve been waiting impatiently and craving for more material!

Don’t miss seeing them both live. It’s going to be a great party. And as always, FREE FOR ALL.

Tom The Lion [Interview]

by: Andrew

The second installment of our monthly interviews, new comer Tom The Lion talks of his musical journey thus far!

There appears to be only little snippets of info on Tom The Lion floating about the internet right now, so tell us a little bit about your musical journey so far? How long have you been a band? What does the foreseeable future hold for you guys?

Well, I’ve been fiddling around with writing and recording for a while now. After a few years of experimenting I ended up with a group of songs to be released as an EP; The adventures of tom the lion chapters 1 & 2, although I wasn’t aware it was chapters 1 & 2 until I came up with chapters 3 & 4 later on, earlier this year. Thats all now fully compiled to be released properly in November. And I’ve just started playing some gigs, having lots of fun working out how to recreate my lonely tinkering into a fully fledged racket, with the help of some of my friends.

What are the Top 5 tracks you have on repeat right now?

Villagers always makes me a little green with envy, his record is amazing. Wilco’s new album is very cool, I have to admit though, they’ve been on my to do list for a while but I’m getting into them in reverse, I’m parallel parking into the Wilco parking bay. The song ‘two weeks’ by grizzly bear is an instant classic, I could always have that on repeat…

Fantasy talk – If you could have a day in the studio with any musician past or present who would it be?

I think Buddy Holly would have been a nice guy to hang out with. Maybe a little writing collaboration… I’d be happy to be the guy at the back on handclaps to be honest.

What was the last album you were really blown away by?

I’m just about to tuck into feist’s new album, and I’m sure it’ll blow me away…

The one song as a musician you wish you could have wrote?

I guess Eleanor Rigby. Its just one of those songs that feels like it was dropped from the sky, its a bit ridiculous that it was written by an actual human being. Not to mention the production and orchestration.

How is the writing process for you productions? Do you have writing partner or do you work alone?

I work alone at the moment, and take the description of my studio flat very literally. To start with it was more of a fumbling through, without any particular aim or direction, but as I’ve grown more confident and able, the process has become more concise. I started out playing drums, so i think i’ve got quite a rhythmic approach to writing.

When you’re not on stage / rehearsing / writing – where will we find you?

I’ll be busy living a very very very wild lifestyle, just like Tinie Tempah.

Finally, besides your standard refreshments, do you request promoters to provide anything novel on your rider?

I haven’t even reached standard refreshment level yet, I still have to buy my own water. I’ll even buy a banana if its a particularly well equipped shop.
