A big shake up of the Dance music line up at Radio One saw Skream & Benga rewarded with a weekly Friday night slot on the station from 11pm to 1am. It’s a great achievement for the pair and testament to the quality of their recent broadcasts for their show ‘In New DJs We Trust’. They will follow on from Annie Mac (7-9pm) and Pete Tong (9-11pm) who retained their regular spots.
Kicking off the festive season early, we’re delighted showcase a handful of our favorite acts from 2011. Very much a family affair (as christmas should be), live performances will come from the brilliant Carousels, Peace and Joe And Will Ask – who debut their brand new live performance for the first time!
DJ’s on the night include Deadly’s own O. Children and the one to watch for 2012, Monki from Rinse FM!
As always with the Deadly Xmas parties, special guests are often known to rear their faces so you can expect some big surprises for this one too! But to make sure there’s no riots outside of the Old Blue, we thought it best to keep it under wraps for now!
We’re super excited about the new series of The Producers starting this week. Direct from the Red Bull Studios London, the series showcases the unique creative process of six of the world’s most exciting producers. Click the image above to watch the brilliant first episode featuring Benga & Youngman.
If you could have a day in the studio with any musician past or present who would it be?
Laurie: I know Dave would probably love to go into the studio with Deadmau5 and see how he makes his kickdrums sound so heavy and suchlike. Me and Fergus would probably go in with Bloc Party and try and join in on their jams but end up just watching them. In terms of new bands, we would love to work with Dems.
What was the last album you were all really blown away by?
Laurie: The last album that I loved was ‘Total Life Forever’ by Foals which came out in May 2010 and is still on constant repeat on my Ipod.
How is the writing process for your productions? Do you all get together and start throwing ideas about or will one person lead proceedings?
We tend to go off an idea that one of us has and then build on it or just sit around playing together for ages until something good comes out. We don’t really have a specific formula.
When you’re not on stage / rehearsing / writing – where will we find you?
Probably on Dave’s computer mastering one of our tracks. We really don’t do much other than write music, we are quite boring.
Ambitions – Where would you like to be in ten years?
Hopefully sitting back in a mansion with lots of money… Or sitting back with a selection of material that we are very proud of.
As the November monthly rolls around it’s time to see what gets the bands on the bill up and moving. Peace are first in the email seat – read of their love for Gary Barlow and their ambitions to get on the property ladder.
What are the Top 5 tracks you have on repeat right now?
Ahead of her performance at the Deadly Monthly this week, we took the time to chat with Little Jinder about some of her favorite tracks!
What are the Top 5 tracks you have on repeat right now?
This housetrack by Catz & Dogz from a weird LP called untitled lovesongs or something like that, I dont know what the track is called but they sampled an old Bibio-tune that i loooove, their edit made me burst into tears the first time i heard it.
Fantasy talk – If you could have a day in the studio with any musician past or present who would it be?
Id love to have a massive reverb party with coctau twins.
What was the last album you were really blown away by?
Hm. I dont know. I dont really listen to albums like that anymore but my biggest wow-moment musically was when I was 12 and my stepdad told me about San Francisco and how I would love it there as he played that Neil Young – Harvest Moon record. That was pretty emotional.
How is the writing process for your productions? Do you have writing partner or do you work alone?
I work alone and I sort of hate it. I wish I had someone to bounce things with more often but im to dominant and shy at the same time so it makes it hard. Im working on it though. Sort of.
When you’re not on stage / rehearsing / writing – where will we find you?
Somewhere beeing social.
What’s the first thing you pack before boarding the tour bus for a string of shows?
Hm. I dont know. I never pack enough. Im to lazy to carry alot of stuff around. Probably like some knickers. Or my phone. And noise cancelling-headphones. I love those! I dont even listen to anything in them. I just cancel out the noise in the plane and fall asleep like a baby. And drool a lot.
Having played a significant role in creating stunning videos for both O. Children and Drop The Lime, Jake Harmer is constantly delivery great content and we’re more than happy to share his new work with you. Check them out and spread the word!
Since Huey Morgan finished covering for Lauren Laverne weekday mornings on BBC 6Music, I haven’t really had any reason to bother with the radio. This week though, Domino Records are broadcasting on 87.7 FM in the UK (and online at www.dominorad.io), and have a great schedule packed full of music and discussion from artists on the label, friends, tastemakers, and public thinkers.
Deadly’s own Count & Sinden will be on air Wednesday 8 June from 4-6PM and you can check out a full list of who’s playing here, so be sure to tune in this week.
I went to Spuntino in Soho a few weeks ago (post foodie buzz, pre-timeout review) and it was my best dining experience so far of 2011.
Here’s all you need to know:
- battered soft shell crab with tobasco aioli
- greens in a garlic sauce
- a negroni mixed right in front of me in one of those delightful little Duralex glasses
- DEEP FRIED OLIVES – breaded and stuffed with a hint of anchovy and parmesan
- and the best deconstructed peanut butter sandwich ever conceived of: red berry jam between two slices of peanut butter semifreddo, sprinkled with peanut brittle.
Spuntino 61 Rupert Street, Soho, London, W1D 7PJ, no bookings etc.
